Mediterranean Diet Plan Review

Is The Mediterranean Diet Plan Right For You?

For years research has shown that some areas of the Mediterranean have had a higher life expectancy and lower rates of heart disease despite the fact that higher amounts of fat are often consumed. The Mediterranean Diet Plan is not just a diet but more of a lifestyle. Food is probably not the only thing responsible for people in the Mediterranean having longer healthier lives. Stress and a slower pace of life also play a key role.

Lower amounts of processed foods are likely consumed as the people of the Mediterranean eat more locally grown foods. Fresh fish is also been a staple is the diet of many Mediterranean cultures. The overall quality of the food is more important than trying to make fast quick meals like we do in North America. Less processed food probably equals less sodium and preservatives.

Often the first thing many people think of when the Mediterranean Diet Plan is mentioned is olive oil, which is used often in place of other oils and dressings. Even though the diet is not a low fat diet it is low in saturated fats. Monounsaturated fats like olive oil are thought to be the good fats and beneficial to the heart. Olive oil is also a good source of antioxidants and is usually eaten with vegetables or fish. The Mediterranean diets are much higher in fish and lower in beef. Fish contain heart healthy omega 3 oils which keep the blood running smoothly thanks to its vasodilatory properties.

A glass of wine is also thought to play a role in heart health, however only in moderation. Red wine contains resveratrol and polyphenols both of which might be beneficial in reducing heart disease and lowering the rates of cancer.

Trying to follow the Mediterranean Diet Plan might result in better overall health but you should also try and incorporate other factors into your lifestyle and concentrate on stress reduction. Learn to enjoy cooking meals instead of putting things in the microwave and trying to get them to the table as quick as possible.
