You, there. Yes, you. Are you pregnant? Are you familiar with gestational diabetes? What is it? It is a condition wherein a pregnant woman acquires diabetes during her pregnancy. We may not be aware of this but in fact, it is a common condition among pregnant women all over the world. Approximately 5% pregnant women all over the world are experiencing this. If I'm an expecting mother, I'd be scared of it too. Not to worry though. There will be no problem as long as you maintain your blood sugar level. Maintaining your blood glucose level is helpful in preventing any complications during delivery. You don't want any complications, right? A diabetic's body does not provide the enough insulin the body requires. In another case, it may be that the cells are not using insulin correctly. Whatever the reason may be, insulin is needed by the body to get glucose from your blood into your cells. This can be controlled provided the right diet is consumed. But if your diabetes is in an advanced stage, insulin should be injected into your system to control your glucose level.
For those with mild gestational diabetes, a balanced diet is very much needed. Don't worry as you are not alone in this. This diet aims proper intake of the right amount of foods with the needed vitamins and minerals.
The diet plan includes guidelines to be followed. First is to consume foods packed with fiber. You should also make sure that your calories come from good carbohydrates. Second, you should eat three meals a day instead of just two to manage your weight. The meals should be moderate in size. Eat about four snacks everyday too. A bedtime snack wouldn't hurt either. It is also important be take your meals on time every day. Never ever skip any meal as this will only make your blood glucose level inconsistent. Third, do eat even before hunger strikes. Failing to do so will only increase your blood sugar. Fourth, watch out what you are eating or drinking. Avoid carbonated drinks, fruit juices or anything that has simple sugar in it. Obviously, these will increase your blood sugar. Eat fresh fruits that are fiber-rich instead of drinking fruit juices. Milk intake should also be limited to only two glasses per day as they contain lactose. There are other sources of calcium aside from milk if this is what you are worried about. Fifth, exercise regularly. You can do brisk walking. Or better yet, you can just walk after your daily meals. Sixth is to drink more than ten glasses of water to regulate the body's water levels.
