I remember a few years ago the Atkins diet plans were all the rage. A new fad diet that everyone was seeing great results with. Even my own dad started on it and loved it. But where is it now? Do you hear about it still being the best way? I can only find information about the Atkins diet stuff when I go looking for it. I'm not being bombarded every day with ads and sales pitches to live my life a new way.
3 Facts Why The Atkins Diet Plans Are Seen Less
Sustainability - One of the truly unique features of the Atkins diet plans were their ability to let you lose weight fast by not eating any carbohydrates. The problem with this is after a period of time, your body becomes accustom to the eating style and you no longer lose weight. Typically this happened before you hit your goal. After reaching this point it was very difficult to lose any more weight unless you changed your diet completely, and sometimes that didn't work.
Fat and Cholesterol - Another thing people abused was that you got to eat a lot of meat, butter, and other fats because fats were the replacements for the carbohydrates. Many people who had bad cholesterol or heart conditions had to be very careful with what they ate. Those who didn't have problems occasionally developed problems because of the diet.
Rebounding - One of the worst effects of the Atkins diet plans was that once you reached your goal, or plateaued, or had to stop it due to health issues, you would go back to eating normally. The problem is your carbohydrate starved system just starts packing on the pounds with any carbohydrates you eat and suddenly, and quickly, you gain all your weight back. In some cases people reported gaining more weight after stopping Atkins.
So are the Atkins diet plans still good to use? I'd have to say no. Because of the inability to be on the diet for any lengthy period of time, the drawbacks far outweigh the short term gains. When you start the diet you can't keep eating the same way and expect to continue to lose weight, you will plateau. The types of foods that are acceptable are also unhealthy in large quantities if you aren't watching very closely what you eat. And lastly, once you are off the diet most, if not all, the weight comes back and all your hard work is lost.
Now when it comes to losing weight, diets are a short term solution. Many people don't realize that eating habits need to be modified a small bit to be healthy.
