I've seen diet plans for vegetarians that are high protein diets, that is to say, vegetarian versions of the Atkins diet. Talk about missing the point. If you were already a committed vegetarian and looking to sculpt your abs into something resembling a Men's Health cover, that might be the diet for you. But for the rest of us, a high protein diet is a really bad idea. It's a really bad idea for the ab sculptors too. That's why they say only to use the diet for a short time.
Excess protein is a major problem for western society. It is responsible for contributing to all the major health hazards for adults - arthritis, heart disease, stroke, cancer - so the idea of a so-called healthy vegetarian diet which is protein-based makes me want to laugh. At least it would if it weren't so appalling.
The question 'where do vegetarians get their protein' is also a bit of a joke since it's been proven that even vegetarians and vegans have too much protein in their diets already. But the thing that gets me about these diet plans is that sometimes they are presented as weight loss diets!
If you want to lose weight fast and keep the weight off, you should try a low fat, vegetarian diet plan. And I've heard all the excuses: oh it's really inconvenient; oh it's really expensive; oh I won't get the nutrition that my body needs; oh it's not very tasty. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Not only will you not starve and be miserable, you'll be able to eat really well and be completely satisfied without feeling bloated and risking your health on a series of life shortening diseases.
People also think they'll need vitamin and mineral supplements to compliment any vegetarian diet, well let me just blow away that myth. Who do you think has been perpetuating this idea? That's right, the vitamin supplements industry which let's face it is big business.
You don't need supplements. An organised vegetarian diet plan is nutritionally more than adequate and will not only help you lose weight fast, it will add years to your life. For more information on low fat, vegetarian diet plans see my website where I debate all the pros and supposed cons of becoming a vegetarian.
