Why Atkins is a Bad Fat Loss Diet Plan - You Will Be Amazed at What Really Happens

There are actually a lot of reasons why Atkins is a bad fat loss diet plan. The most obvious being your body needs carbohydrates. To stay healthy you need to reduce how much saturated fat and bad cholesterol you intake. Atkins is designed to have you eat food that actually promotes heart and kidney disease in large quantities. The main way people ingest saturated fat is through meat and the induction period of the diet has you eating almost nothing but meat. This forces your body into ketosis.

Ketosis is part of the starvation process. It happens when your body uses fat as energy when there is not enough carbohydrates for energy. Atkins forces your body into this state as part of its fat loss diet plan by restricting weekly intake of carbs to less than 20 grams. Your body goes into starvation mode even though you are eating more steak and fat than you normally do because you are not eating enough carbs. Ketosis in and of itself for short periods of time is not bad, but for longer than a week at a time or repeated Ketosis causes bone density loss (which is really bad in women) kidney stones, fatigue, constipation, and horribly bad breath.

There are also long term side effects of using Atkins as a fat loss diet plan. You are in taking a dangerously high amount of saturated fat which can lead to heart disease in addition to eating a lot of eggs which are high in bad cholesterol. Atkins is very unbalanced nutritionally and will cause deficiencies almost immediately. The extremely high intake of animal proteins can also lead to premature osteoporosis, kidney issues, premature cataracts and cancer. Your body is designed in such a way that you need a balance of different foods and you simply will not get that balance on Atkins.

The good news about Atkins as a fat loss diet plan is that it works. You will lose weight and you will lose weight quickly. If you can justify all of the negatives and you are not a vegetarian, this might be a good short term plan for you. Your doctor will probably not recommend you use this diet, but he or she may recommend or prescribe vitamin and mineral substitutes to help offset everything you are restricting from your diet. It takes a huge commitment to the plan for Atkins to work and if you slip during the introduction phase, you are not going to lose weight.
