Diet Plan Secrets - 3 Reasons Why Many Diets Don't Work

At any given time, there are millions of people with good intentions, slogging their way through yet another diet plan. Usually the person has heard some good things about this diet and decides to give it a whirl. Nothing wrong with that, except, many who start out with all the optimism in the world, will end up bitterly disappointed mid-way through. They will not stay on it for very long and won't lose the weight they desperately want to lose.

Reason #1 - It Isn't Really a Lack of Will Power

When a person is several pounds overweight and fails to stay on a diet, it's almost a given that they and others will assume that they failed because of their lack of willpower. I'm sure you've thought this yourself. If only you hadn't of had that last bag of chips, or if only you hadn't given in to temptation and ate that piece of cheesecake, or if only you'd had the willpower to say no to that fried chicken, etc.

This lack of willpower thing has been drummed into our heads for so long that we just accept it as being the truth. But what if it isn't?

What if your willpower has nothing to do with it?

If you are familiar with many popular diet plans, you know that they aren't really that easy to follow, thanks to their complexity of codes, zones, carbs, calorie counting and phases. Here's you, starting cold turkey from eating your normal way, and you suddenly jump into a world where every food has a value assigned.

There are numbers to keep track of, fat to measure and foods that you can and cannot eat. Some of these plans should give a degree in dietology!

Many people just can't deal with the strictness of the plan. They go back to their old eating habits - filled with fat and calories, but at least you don't need a Masters degree to enjoy your meals.

Reason #2 - You Can't Change Old Habits That Quickly

You've been happily eating one way for many years and now you're suddenly expected to change course and stay away from all your favorite comfort foods - just like magic!

This isn't realistic. All of us have strong psychological associations with the food we eat. Sometimes we eat certain foods because it reminds us of home. Some people eat lots of junk food because it represents safety and comfort. Food is an emotional experience and when any sudden change in eating habits is made, that has an effect on our mind and mood.

To test this theory, go to your kitchen and throw out all the foods you shouldn't have. Throw away that bag of cookies, those potato chips, the donuts, the cream pie, the muffins, the dinner rolls, the hot dogs, the soda, the frozen pizza, etc.

Can't do it?

That's because you really LIKE these foods. Most diets force you to throw these foods away and replace them with healthy stuff. Nothing wrong with that, except you often end up missing your favorites and long for the days you could indulge. Old food habits are not broken overnight.

Reason #3 - A Diet Plan Isn't a Miracle Worker

Contrary to popular belief, a diet will not turn you into a super model, make you magnetically attractive, help you get that dream job or magically make you a different person. Some diet plans market themselves as miracle workers, but in reality that's just marketing - don't believe the hype.

A diet is a tool to help you lose weight and get healthier. It's only as good as the commitment you put into it. After you lose the weight, you'll still have to work at other areas in your life in order to have ultimate success. Make sure you're not putting too many unrealistic expectations on a weight loss plan.
