Things to Consider Before Choosing a Diet Plan

A healthy diet plan is essential for anybody who intends to lose weight, burn fat and get into shape. We hear so much about them, from celebrity gossip columns to fitness and general lifestyle magazines. However, when we plan our own diets it is often the case that we fail within the first few weeks.

So with this in mind, I thought I would write this article which will provide some food for thought (no pun intended) for anybody who is keen to follow a healthy diet plan and stick to it in the long term.

Think about your lifestyle

This is a consideration which, despite being obvious, is often overlooked by many people. I have a full time job in management, which means hectic weekdays with early starts and late finishes. I need foods which can be cooked fairly quickly and easily, and healthy snacks that require little preparation and can be consumed on the go. As I enjoy an active social life as well, I also allow myself the grace of enjoying the odd bad meal, although I do try to find the healthiest option on the menu beforehand! So when you are planning your diet, make sure that you think about your typical day: what do you do? How many opportunities do you get during the day to sit down and eat something? Do you get in late and therefore have little time to prepare an extravagant meal? These factors may not necessarily stop you from planning a healthy diet, although they may result in you needing to be a little bit more selective in order to find good foods which can suit your daily schedule.

Do not eat what you do not like!

If you are a grown person who picks your own food, then I personally do not see the point of choosing something that you really do not like just because it is healthy! I think that I have a great diet plan and it only consists of foods which I enjoy eating. Believe me, if you do not like what you eat then you are less likely to maintain the motivation to eat it.

Flexibility is the key

For me, this is the most essential thing to remember, for both nutrition and for exercise. As an amateur boxer I work, play, and also train very hard: I do recognise that my job takes precedence (it pays the bills, after all!) and when I have to work late and miss an evening training session then I look at the remainder of my week and juggle things around in order to make up the lost session. My diet plan is also the same. A little flexibility in terms of what I chose to eat helps me to maintain my diet all year around and prevents me from feeling guilty when I happen to eat something which I normally would not. Think about the 80:20 Rule and apply it: it is not about what you eat every single time, but what you eat most of the time that counts. After all, your diet plan is meant to make you look and feel better; if you start to become a slave to your diet then perhaps you are taking it a little bit too far.
