Vitamin is an organic compound required in tiny amount by every living organism. These compounds are not synthesized by the body, but instead need to be obtained from the diet. These compounds are classified by their biological and chemical activity.

Vitamins, their biological names and function

Vitamin A- 'Retinol'. It is found in form of retinol and other retinoid. It is a fat soluble vitamin, considered important component for vision and bone growth. It also helps in gene transcription, skin health, immune function, embryonic development, antioxidant activities and haematopoiesis.

Vitamin B1- 'Thiamine'. It is a water soluble vitamin that helps in maintaining nervous system. It is necessary for healthy mucous membranes and considered essential for converting carbohydrates into energy.

Vitamin B2- it is biologically known as Riboflavin. Some of its main functions are as follows:-

It plays an important role in oxidation and reduction reaction.

Vitamin B3- It is biologically known as Niacin. It helps in DNA synthesis and essential for releasing energy from carbohydrate, fats and proteins. Not only this, but it is also considered necessary for healthy skin, digestive and nervous system.

Vitamin B6- Pyridoxine is its biological name. Some of its functions are as follows:-

It helps in manufacturing and conversion of proteins and amino acids.

Vitamin B9- 'Folic acid'. It is an important vitamin, which act as co-enzyme. It helps in synthesis and breakdown of several proteins. It does not help in tissue growth, but is also necessary for production of RBC.

Vitamin B12- 'Cyanocobalamin'. It is commonly found in liver, kidney, oysters, dry milk and dairy products. It is one of the important components that is needed for body building proteins.

Vitamin C- 'Ascorbic acid'. Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin that is needed for formation of an important protein known as Collagen. It holds the cell together, resists against infection and improves iron absorption.

Vitamin D- 'Calciferol'. This vitamin is found in milk, milk products, liver and salmon. It is important for the growth and maintenance of our skin. It can directly be synthesized, if skin is exposed to sunlight on regular basis. It is must for healthy bones and teeth.

Vitamin E- it is biologically known as Tocopherol. Some of the main functions of Vitamin E in our body are:-

Protect the functioning of cells.
Essential for normal reproductive functions.
Enable the blood to flow freely into tissues.
Oxygenates the tissue.

Vitamin K-it is commonly known as 'Phylloquinone'. It is very essential as it helps in blood clotting. In case of deficiency of this vitamin, improper blood clotting can cause severe effects on the body.
