Reducing Tummy Fat - Facts About Low Carb Diet Plans

Up until recently, the low-fat diets were all the craze. The FDA has been a strong proponent in low-fat diets as a way to remain healthy and control weight for decades. However, during the last few years, the low to no carb diets have become the most popular form of diet plans. They have been known by various names but these diets are commonly known as the Atkins diet, Hollywood diet, high protein diet, and South Beach diet. Only recently has the FDA has begun studying low carb diet plans due to their increasing popularity.

Interestingly, some experts suggest that the FDA had it wrong the whole time. All the foods we eat are composed of three types of molecules: fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Low-fat diet plans, while lower in fat, are often high in carbohydrates. These experts claim that the increase in high carb foods has caused the recent increase in obesity rates.

Next time read the labels on the foods you purchase and notice how many include sugar or sugar derivatives like high fructose corn syrup. Also compare the normal product with the low-fat product and you will see how the low-fat product has higher carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates provide the quickest form of energy for our bodies and are much easier to process than fats. This energy comes in the form of glucose, a six carbon molecule found in all the foods we eat. You may have read how runners before a race will often carb load the night before. This is to ensure that they have sufficient energy (glucose) for the race.

In our bodies, excess carbs are converted to fat and stored in adipose tissue (fat cells). This would normally not be a problem if we are very active. Low carb diet plans aim to force the body to reverse this process by starving the body of its quickest energy source and force it to break down fat into glucose for use.

Our bodies are constantly converting glucose to fat and fat back to glucose throughout the day. Because of this many have seen quick results with this type of diet and it is the reason why this diet has gotten so popular. Unfortunately, low carb diet plans are not without risks and one should be properly informed. Low carb diet plans may provide you with a quick loss in a few pounds but, due to its risks, many nutritionists don't recommend that it be used as a long-term diet plan.
